It's not often that we receive a request from a publisher that makes me downright giddy, but yesterday when Flannery forwarded me this message:

"Frances Hardinge has been called one of the best kept secrets in childrens/YA literature but as a huge fan of hers (and also working on her books) I don’t want her to be a secret, I want to help as many people as I can discover her."

I kind of got more than a bit excited.  My response to this message went something like this:

A) You had me at Frances Hardinge.
B) WHERE DO I SIGN UP??

Only...you know...I did try to at least appear slightly more professional than that.  I've made no secret during my time here at The Readventurer that I am a huge Frances Hardinge fan.  Remember when I:
  • Challenged both Noelle from Young Adult Anonymous and Maja from The Nocturnal Library to read one of her books...within a two month period?  (I didn't even realize I had done that until today.)
  • Lugged one of Frances Hardinge's books on a four hour bus ride to New York so I could hand deliver it to my friend Heidi and insist that she read it?
  • Used A Face Like Glass as one of the main reasons I still have hope for YA fantasy?
  • Wished I could sample the cheeses of Caverna?
  • Gushed all over the place for my reviews of A Face Like Glass and The Lost Conspiracy?
  • Listed A Face Like Glass as one of my favorite reads of 2012?
  • Checked out the short story anthology Under My Hat just so I could read her story (okay, and Margo Lanagan's) and then return it to the library?
That last one may or may not be a more recent occurrence that I've been keeping under my hat (tee hee) until now.

So today I will quite happily participate in spreading the word about the excellent works of Frances Hardinge.  Since you've already heard a lot about me and my opinions, I thought I'd share some thoughts from my favorite reviewers about this fantastic author:
"I hardly know where to start when it comes to Hardinge's spectacular novel. For one, let me assure  you  that it blew me away and, despite being a Middle Grade Fantasy novel, I found that it was every bit as thought-provoking and intelligent as YA and Adult reads, if not better because of its subtleties, cleverness, and surprising plot twists."
--Keertana at Ivy Book Bindings, writing about A Face Like Glass

"I am overcome with Imperious Feelings demanding that I find the Right Words to write this review. Fly By Night is Absurdly Brilliant. This is not an overstatement."
--Ana at The Book Smugglers, writing about Fly By Night.

"The Lost Conspiracy isn’t just a darn good story, it’s a story that can open your mind and change the way you approach life.  It will ask you to question the meaning of stories, acknowledge the importance of understanding one another, understanding yourself, and knowing what you need from life.  It is a story of stories in which we get to wonder how much of what is made up just might be true, and how much is really just conspiracy.  The Lost Conspiracy exists so that when you pass the point where the stories end, you will know you can go on."
--Heidi at Bunbury in the Stacks, writing about The Lost Conspiracy

"A writer who asks a lot from the reader is a writer who believes the reader can deliver.  That’s a writer with a lot of respect for her audience. It’s a risk for an author to demand so much, and I want Hardinge to be rewarded for it. That’s because it’s a risk for a reader, too.  A reader has to have faith in an author to invest so much in a story, and I think Hardinge pays back on that investment, a hundred times over.

Reading
The Lost Conspiracy is like climbing the mountain and turning around to see the world laid out at your feet.  Only, in this case, the mountain is a volcano."
--Megan Whalen Turner, writing about The Lost Conspiracy

Today marks the release date for the paperback edition of A Face Like Glass, and the publisher has very kindly offered up a copy for us to give away.  Open internationally!

P.S. - I also happened to notice that the U.S. hardcover editions of The Lost Conspiracy and Well Witched are only $6.80 today over at Amazon!

I wish more people knew about Hardinge, too. Sadly I haven't been able to convince anyone around me to give her a go. I hope you have more luck.

I've read The Lost Conspiracy and have been biding my time before picking up my next Hardinge. When I do, I want to savor it. She's a genius.

One author who I think is a bit underrated is M.T. Anderson. He writes YA that is both funny and wickedly smart. I loved his scifi dystopian Feed and beg family and friends to read it.

I've never heard of this author so I'd first like to thank you for bringing her to my attention! I'll have to look up the order of her books so I can dive in.

An author I wish got more recognition is Beverly Jenkins. She's seems popular enough among AA readers, but I wish people everywhere who love romance and historical romance would give her a chance!

Thanks for the great giveaway!

Hardinge is on the list of authors I've been meaning to read. She seems completely amazing. I think I even checked Fly by Night out of the library a couple years ago but didn't have time to read it before it had to go back.

One author I'm always talking up to people is Shanna Swendson. I don't read much chick lit anymore, but her Enchanted, Inc. series is completely hilarious and wonderful. It's really not well-known, so I try to promote it whenever I can.

I was contacted for this too! I was so excited and then I wasn't sure if Sally meant to contact me because she was promoting the UK Cover and then I had to hold my post till I got home from classes to check if it was okay, but it's live now! Although not nearly as good as yours! ;) I'm so glad you participated in this too and I really hope Hardinge gets the recognition she deserves. Coincidentally, I just picked up The Lost Conspiracy from the library too, so I'll have to read it ASAP! :D

I love hearing so much praise. I got Fly By Night recently after hearing similar praise. I need to read it ASAP.

I've been seeing Hardinge's name crop up a lot lately (actually, now that I'm glancing at your list, I'm not surprised :D ) but I know nothing about her books! Looking at all this high praise, I think I need to rectify that..

Definitely Amy McNamara. She wrote Lovely Dark and Deep and I absolutely love it. It's YA contemporary and it's got absolutely raw real characters and a beautiful setting and wonderful romance and awesome writing:)

Thank you:)

Andy Gavin. He published two books so far, and they were really good, but not many people know about him because he is an indie author.

This book is on its way to me, so I won't enter the giveaway, but I'm excited to see all that praise! I'm definitely looking forward to getting started. :)

Hardinge is a wonderful writer, and I agree it's a shame that she's seen as somewhat of a secret. Here's hoping that word-of-mouth does its thing!

You had me at Megan Whalen Turner, for she is the one that I wish EVERYONE knew about. I love that woman.

Adding Hardinge to my TBR list, stat.

Catie, this post makes me so happy and I'm very flattered that you included my words on her as well--thank you SO MUCH for hauling that book on an obscenely long bus ride for me. I really can't see Frances Hardinge praised or talked about enough, and I will push her books on anyone and everyone. I too very much want some cheese from Caverna.

Hardinge is such a wonderfully whimsical writer. I really think she's just such a hidden gem, and doesn't get enough love. :(

My wish right now is that God should continue to bless Dr Emu for his good works towards the life of those people who are heart broken. My name is Michael DeBruin and I am from the USA, it's been a while since my lover's attitude changed from being the caring type she has been to me, but later turned out not to be caring at all. But not long, I later discovered that my lover was having an affair with someone else. and also she told me she doesn't need me after all we pass through then a friend told me about a spell caster. that with the spell I will get back my woman, I took his cell number then called him and also what's-app him which he reply to me and I did some sacrifices to the spell man and he bought the items for me which he used for the sacrifices and later called me that before 48 hours my love will come back to me and now we are more in love with each other than ever. you can reach him on WhatsApp +2347012841542 or reach him via mail ; emutemple@gmail.com , my lover returned back and broke up with the other guy she was having a relationship with... Thank you Dr Emu.
